Speaking of Labor Day ... Electrical Discharge Machining - How does Wire EDM work ? In 1980, a physicist friend gave me his copy of the 100th Annual Edition of the American Machinist. There was an article about the History of EDM in it. In summary, back in the 30s, the Big 3 automakers had a think tank study the degradation of spark plugs and why plugs had to be "gapped" periodically. What they discovered was that where both ends of the sparks strike, just like lightning blows big chunks and limbs off of trees, those controlled sparks blow small bits of steel off the sparkplug, slowly opening the gap to a dimension that's not optimal. So you "gapped" the plugs with "feeler gages" to improve the spark and ignition of the gasoline. And then they went "Heeeeyyyyy", and now we have incredible EDMs. 😎 ML

  -  laruetactical @ws7z ... No sir, the wire takes a hit just like the workpiece, not so much of a hit, but unusable none-the-less. 9 likes
  -  marauding_az @ws7z it constantly feeds from a spool, and the used wire is disposed of in a collection bin behind the machine. Very awesome machines to use and work with. 1 like

  -  laruetactical @_s.na.pr ... Yes sir and we have a high-speed graphite mill 1 like
  -  _s.na.pr @laruetactical awesome. Spent several years programming/machining electrodes and grinding single lip cutters on a dekel. Always wanted to run a WEDM. 1 like
newavdubs At first I thought "That's a strange 3D printer." But then I saw the workpiece and said "Well, well, well!" 1 like

  -  confiscatedeez @javier_vazquez_satx for real, and I just got my 12" MGU in the mail Friday. I'm kicking myself for not checking my phone more often during work hours 1 like
  -  javier_vazquez_satx @confiscatedeez i got one and was going to order some more but got busy. When i checked again they were sold out.
rev1nra I assume the wire isn't reusable afterwards except for recycling? 2 likes
indyhemi I have 25+ years running wire EDM's. Still amazed at what the can do 1 like
