... Please excuse these Musings of a Boomer ... Going through some old pics this morning and came across this one of a 140g Berger Hybrid that I had my guys wire EDM the nose off of so I could get a peek inside. Now that I'm looking at it again, I wonder how she'd fly if we ram-EDM'd a small clean hole through the tip to clean it up a wee bit more. 🤷 ML

  -  laruetactical @charliesclones ... I had the same thought about airspace ... maybe put a finger sammich or two in it 😎 1 like
booozyhoperators Giraud (who is also in tx) makes a meplat trimmer. You should know this!

perez2021juan Wow that EDM thingy makes a super clean cut 🧐

  -  laruetactical @snydairsnydair ... I could put a Delrin Ogive collar on the electrode and let her burn until she sparked-out 😎🔥
  -  snydairsnydair @laruetactical MCR sells tooling for a non-EDM solution...but rock on! I want to see your solution

  -  snydairsnydair @laruetactical Sounds like it's time for LaRue to start working on some on-bullet data collection packages
rojoll01 Very very good question
optiskate I'm really curious as well. You should do some science.

antb2048 They make polymer tips for a reason... would be interesting to see
douglabell Cool pic!
slappomatt Tipping bullets is a thing. It makes such a small difference it's not worth that hassle imo
jlange843 Tell them to get back on those flat MBTs and stop cutting up bullets!😄
brad_jackie55555 What is that? A 6.5 Creedmore?
unslicedmatt Everyday I need to resist the urge to cut random things in half in the wire edm machine I run. I tried to get my boss to let me make a cutaway of an er20 holder that split
norights__ Do you use your wire edm's more than the sinkers?
omcigars How big of a parachute do you put in front of the boat tail.. I'm thinking of it
jonwaynetaylor I trim up mine with a Montour County trimmer. Out to 1k, I can't tell any difference in dispersion. But I still do it because...well because. 3 likes
threepereaper68 We've been fluting bullets for someone, I think they have a patent already , supposedly they gained a fair increase in long range

jspryce I'm not a ballistics expert and can't wrap my brain around this - how does the open tip aid in aerodynamics?
  -  laruetactical @jspryce ... Not sure the open tip helps or detracts, just want to "balance the tire" so to speak 2 likes
  -  davidewade @jspryce I read years ago that the open tip was a byproduct of the manufacturing process not a design to assist in accuracy. Some bench rest shooters will even uniform the tips.
danieldoubled85 I'm no expert, but if you clean up the opening you would get a more consistent flight. That's my prediction. You could test this by RAM'n say 10 of a box of 20 and then shoot the 10 clean ones on one target and the other 10 on a different. But honestly it probably won't matter that much. One time reloading I noticed the ELD bullets had a weight difference plus or minus a few grain. This was a few years ago and I don't remember the exact details but it was pretty consistent of they were either 3 grains light or 3 grains heavy
jim_fusco Must do it for science, Mark!
hondo402 Less variations and imperfections in your bullets, lead to less variation and imperfection in your shots.

henry_bruns Damage to, or a non-uniform base edge affects accuracy much more than a messy tip. This can be tested by filing a nick in the base of bullets and checking accuracy vs. the accuracy of a damaged tip. Benchrest shooters have known this for quite a while.

carryasig One of your neighbors is cutting rings around the tips of similar bullets to improve the expansion of the bullet and the flight characteristics. I have also seen someone dimpling the base of the bullet very precisely to improve the accuracy of the bullet. Have you seen this and have you use them?
  -  laruetactical @carryasig ... Haven't seen that, but years ago we made hollow bullets for a scientist and the hole was shaped like a wing inside. Launched at incredible speed using a gas cap.
  -  jabon_clamshell @carryasig Dimpling bullet bases has zero real effect on lr accuracy. There's no science behind it
  -  laruetactical @jabon_clamshell ... Dimpling the cases astronomically uniformly poses a bit of a challenge 1 like
ks_maddics_kc During the supersonic flight regime as long as the shock waves are consistent it shouldn't have too much of an impact. Now of course there will a slight change to the center of gravity on the projectile by having unbalanced mass off of the centerline axis. Still a small impact. I would like to run the math using Lagrangians and then compare to real world data though. Always good to test theory repeatedly. On large cannon rounds they will often chop the tip flat to make the shock waves more predictable and to reduce tip damage.
t4r_snow_tank That's freaking cool @laruetactical 😮
