... And now here's those jaws nicely installed in the vise on the right ... about to hit the "Start" button. ML

hobbs_tactical Looks a lot like my workstation today, minus the receivers, of course.

  -  laruetactical @jordanlrick ... Yes, making 40,000 LaRue QD mounts for the Marines in 2019 was a bit of a challenge ... "Improvise, Adapt, Overcome" - ML 2 likes
  -  handloadsandholdovers @laruetactical I got mine before the 40k USMC order but my SPR-E mount is absolutely rock solid and out of all the others I have (Bobro, ADM, Vortex, etc) it's my favorite
srodman406 Is there a reason you dont mfg your lowers and uppers in, say, a HMC, or maybe a 5 axis machine?
  -  laruetactical @srodman406 ... Yes, and I've got 5 Haas horizontals. They have their application and I use horizontals when the situation calls for it. ML 2 likes
  -  srodman406 @laruetactical just a friendly question from a 25 yr machinist, lol.....wouldn't the ability to attack all the features and different ops on uppers/lowers be well suited for a multi axis machine? drilling the bolt hole catch pin hole in a cool fixture on a manual machine is super cool, just doesn't seem cost effective... 1 like
  -  srodman406 @srodman406 again, a friendly question....not busting balls or being a dick, lol
  -  laruetactical @srodman406 ... 25 years old or been a machinist for 25 years ? 3 likes

  -  laruetactical @srodman406 ... Roger that. I came out of machining school in '78 and bought my first manual lathe and mill and hung out my shingle summer of 1980. Back to your question - horizontal has only one spindle and I need a half dozen cutters going at the same time in order to get decent volume hitting the floor. ML 2 likes
  -  srodman406 @laruetactical I hear you on that....the age old question....expensive, multi axis machines doing parts complete in one op, but only one at a time OR smaller, cheaper, paid for VMC's (multiple spindles running simultaneously).....thank for your feedback...I always enjoy your smartxass posts/remarks, lol
6gundaddy If you have a good probe on your CNC to check your X/Y or a solid stop there is no reason you can't run the process he is running. I started out in high school running manual mills and turret lathes and thought I was doing something. Then when we got our first Mazak I felt under appreciated.
  -  laruetactical @odomrusty_6gundaddy ... I have a worldclass tool room staffed with several Toolmaking SuperBowl Ring holders. Toolmaking is about half and half - half manual machines and half CNC machines. ML 1 like
  -  6gundaddy @laruetactical it takes a good stable of workers that understand the old and new to be able to keep things going. I was just talking to a friend the other day about kids coming out of school that have no clue how to run a manual lather mill but are great on plugging in numbers and changing parts. It's the guys that can do both and really make the CNC work in all axis that set them apart.
  -  laruetactical @odomrusty_6gundaddy ... The guys and gals changing parts are our bread and butter .. keeping our CNCs running day and night, while babying the tooling, keeping dimensionally ahead of the cutter's trends, always rolling off the CNCs with nut bustin' gorgeous parts. There are all sorts of ways to do it wrong, yet they do it right for us again and again and again ... ML
  -  6gundaddy @laruetactical you are so right
